I think that theatre originated from rituals and religion. An example of this is the oldest recorded theatrical piece, Abydos Passion Play or Ikhernofret Stela, which describes the life of Osiris and Iris. This ancient Egyptian piece was performed at Abydos every year to honor Osiris. This being the earliest form of theatre implies that other theatrical pieces that weren’t recorded were being performed at this time, this being an example of universal cultural patterns. Universal cultural patterns portray what society was like at the time a play was created. The Abydos Passion Play portrays what Egyptians thought of their gods at the time, as well as how plays were performed. I argue that religion was the main factor of ritualistic plays, as religion is an attempt for humans to explain the things around them. This is related to De Kerckhove’s Theory of Alphabet, in which humans created theatre in an attempt to explain their surroundings. This attempt to explain events would eventually lead to things being given labels, and later stories, as languages became more complex and abstract.
